Introduction

PMIC

Power Management Innovation Consortium (PMIC) was established in 2021. Supported by platforms including the Advanced Semiconductor Research Institute of the Hangzhou International Science and Technology Innovation Center of Zhejiang University, the College of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University, and the National Engineering Research Center for Power Electronics Applications, it has built a collaborative innovation ecosystem for the power management industry, led by academia and jointly developed by the industry. PMIC conducts systematic and forward-looking industry-university-research collaborative studies and technological innovation in the field of power management technologies, and develops core technologies for future information power systems and new energy power systems.

The main researchers of PMIC are composed of researchers in the power management field from the Advanced Semiconductor Research Institute of the Hangzhou International Science and Technology Innovation Center of Zhejiang University. They carry out research on key technologies urgently needed for PMIC’s research tasks through dedicated projects. The current research team includes 6 Principal Investigators, engineers and postdoctoral researchers, and more than 30 graduate students.

PMIC is a non-profit, public-interest organization that actively promotes achievement exchange and intellectual property transformation, and provides technical consulting services for enterprises related to the power management technology chain in Zhejiang Province and across the country. PMIC adopts a membership system, with research funding raised through crowdfunding. It continuously attracts leading domestic and international enterprises in the power management technology chain that are committed to the development of new power management technologies and products. As of now, more than 40 members have signed agreements, covering leading enterprises in various industries such as power and power management chips, high-frequency magnetic components, new energy vehicles, information power supplies, military power supplies, and consumer electronics (such as Delta Electronics, ZTE, Silergy Semiconductor, VIVO, Infineon, Salcomp, Flex, and Shenzhen Infypower, etc.).

The research goal of PMIC is to start from the needs of information systems and energy storage application systems, focus on future technologies, and tackle common key issues. Facing long-term technological evolution, PMIC explores frontier technology needs for member enterprises, breaks through future technological bottlenecks, reduces industry trial-and-error costs, and fully leverages the leading role of universities in industry technology. It forms complementary advantages with industry R&D work and effectively supports the development of the power electronics industry. The current research directions cover topology, magnetic component design, EMI analysis and suppression, device characterization, integration and packaging, etc. The ultimate goal is to build PMIC into a world-class collaborative innovation center for the power management industry and a peak in the field of high-density, high-efficiency power management technologies worldwide. It explores the cooperative innovation model of an industry ecosystem with Chinese characteristics in the new era, and establishes a win-win and sustainable cooperation ecosystem. The PMIC website was officially launched in the summer of 2022 to further promote achievement sharing and technical exchange within the consortium.
